Diverse smoking of cigarettes in the U.S. is actually a 20th century phenomenon. As we became aware of associated disease proliferation, consumption peaked at just over 4.3 thousands cigarettes per person in 1965 before declining.
Cigarette, meaning small cigar, is of French derivation. While cigars are typically composed entirely of whole-leaf tobacco, cigarettes are blends of cuts from multiple tobacco varieties. Tobacco is a very chemically rich plant. Moreover, local cultivation practices as well fermentation of cigar tobacco leaves contribute to the chemical potency of individual brands. As such, there are an estimated 4,000-plus chemicals generated by combustion of cigars and cigarettes, with numerous recognized adverse health effects.
Cigarettes are made from processed, blended-leaf tobacco wrapped in paper. In cigarettes, the tobacco is air cured to avoid production of some nitrogen-based carcinogens that are precipitated by fermentation. However, reconstituted tobacco (processed stems, tobacco dust, and chemical additives) is added to the majority of cigarettes manufactured, causing the nicotine to be more volatile and thereby respirable as the cigarette burns. Nearly 600 chemical additives have been approved by the FDA for use in cigarettes, leveling the ugly-chemical playing field when compared to the fermented leaf products.
If you are a smoker you probably already know the following.* Because cigarettes cause of fires in private homes, both Europe and the U.S. will ban cigarettes that are not "fire standard compliant" by 2011. * As a major source of indoor air pollution and there is no acceptable level of exposure to tobacco smoke. * Smokers have higher rates of pulmonary cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diseases of the lungs, mouth and throat compared to nonsmokers.* Nicotine levels have progressively increased in cigarettes since approximately 1998, with no functional purpose other than to increase the addictiveness of the products.* Smoking by pregnant women produces low birth weights and neonatal maldevelopment. * Second and third hand smoke causes many of the same diseases as occur in smokers.* The government is very slow to protect the tobacco consumer as well as those exposed via side stream mechanisms.
Electronic cigars, cigarettes or pipes are accessories that deliver vaporized nicotine and enhancers via solution containing cartridges. They are alternatives to traditional smoking. Along with the nicotine delivery, the vapor also provides flavor, scent, and a physical experience similar to that of inhaling tobacco, and handling a cigarette. However, no smoke is actually created. Most electronic cigarettes are reusable with replaceable and refillable parts. However, numerous disposable electronic cigarettes are also marketed.
The automatic models activate upon sensing air flow. Air passing the sensor activates a heating element, vaporizing the solution stored in the mouthpiece. On manual models, the smoker depresses a button to activate the heating element. Generally, an LED light at the tip of the device turns on during inhalation as an on/off indicator and simulating the lit tip of the cigarette.
The mouthpiece is obviously the business end of c-cigarettes. The heating element (also called an atomizer) vaporizes the liquid in the mouthpiece for inhalation. Inside the mouthpiece is a unit that holds the solution. It is constructed so that inhaled air to flow around it, pulling the vapor into the smoker's mouth. The mouthpiece is often referred to as a "cartridge". Depending upon the product, when the liquid in the cartridge is depleted, it can either be refilled or replaced with another pre-filled cartridge. For some models, the entire cigarette is thrown away.
Smoking solutions for refillable cartridges are characteristically referred to as "e-liquid" or "e-juice", and are generally enhanced with one of numerous available scents and flavors. A number of varieties mimic true smoke or specific cigarette brands. Exotic flavors available include scents such as chocolate, apple, caramel, and orange, to name a few. The nicotine is extracted from tobacco and dissolved in propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin. You may also purchase solutions that are nicotine free if tapering completely off nicotine, but having not yet given up the desire to "handle and smoke" a cigarette. The solutions are available in various nicotine concentrations to meet individual needs, ranging from zero to approximately 55 mg/ml (very high).
Vegetable glycerin is not recognized as a hazard to health. OSHA's position on propylene glycol is that symptoms following exposure may include irritation of the eyes, throat, respiratory tract and skin. These symptoms are generally based upon potential work-related exposures. Moreover, although it is possible to experience a brief spray or mist exposure in the circumstances of an industrial leak or overspray, the current OSHA position does not reflect exposure by way of voluntary, repetitive inhalations of a vapor.
Cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco and other tobacco products are in the market in spite of lack of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) support and warning labels. Supporters and opponents exert significant lobbying efforts to keep electronic smoking products on or off the market, and how they are to be classified in the market. The market needs to determine how it will regulate the quality of and constituents in the products, and the world needs to determine how it will address their use in public and private spaces.
Supporters of electronic smoking note that traditional tobacco product use exposes participants to approximately 4,000 chemicals; use of e-smoking accessories notably lessens that exposure. But, continue to acknowledge that electronic smoking is not a chemical exposure-free activity.
For those who still wish to engage in the physical and social aspects of smoking and to those for whom traditional smoking cessation products have not worked, electronic cigarettes are very valuable for "healthier smoking". However, for those near your side stream smoke, at least these accessories are notably less toxic (thereby the endorsement of the American Association of Public Health Physicians of these as an alternative tobacco product).
