Third Hand Smoke And What To Do About It - Three Easy Tips - Health - Quit Smoking

Second Hand Smoke

Second hand smoke is the involuntary inhalation of smoke from tobacco products. It occurs when tobacco smoke permeates any environment, causing its inhalation by all people within that environment. Second hand smoke is a complex mix of chemicals produced by burning tobacco. We all know second hand smoke can cause burning eyes and nasal passages, headaches and nausea in nonsmokers but it is more than just an annoyance. You don't have to be a smoker for smoking to harm you. High in toxic chemicals, second hand smoke plays a role in causing or contributing to a number of health problems, from cardiovascular disease to cancer. Just like primary smoking, second hand smoke can cause disease and death. Second hand smoke has been estimated to cause 46,000 deaths per year from heart disease in adult nonsmokers but second hand smoke has a marked effect on the health of infants and children. Children receiving high doses of second hand smoke, such as those with smoking mothers, run t he greatest risk of experiencing damaging health effects. Children who breathe second hand smoke are more likely to suffer from pneumonia, bronchitis, and other lung diseases. Children who have asthma and who breathe second hand smoke are likely to have more asthma attacks. Smoking during pregnancy has been linked to 10 percent of all infant deaths and may be a risk factor for preterm birth.

Third Hand Smoke

Third hand smoke is a relatively new phrase and most people haven't heard of it, nor do they know do know what it means. Third hand smoke is a term used to describe how tobacco smoke contamination lingers even after a cigarette is extinguished. Third hand smoke represents the particles that are left on things in the environment that was smoked in. For example, these toxins are left in clothes, in draperies, in carpet, on furniture, or in the car. Third hand smoke is what one smells when a smoker gets in an elevator after going outside for a cigarette or in a hotel room where people were smoking. Research that is currently underway speculates that third hand smoke may be as hazardous as second hand smoke. Researchers say that third hand smoke contains heavy metals, carcinogens and even radioactive materials. Among the substances in third hand smoke are hydrogen cyanide, used in chemical weapons; butane, which is used in lighter fluid; toluene, found in paint thinners; arse nic; lead; carbon monoxide; and even polonium-210, a highly radioactive carcinogen. Small children are especially susceptible to third hand smoke exposure because they can inhale near, crawl and play on, or touch and mouth contaminated surfaces. Third hand smoke can remain indoors even long after the smoking has stopped. Like exposure to low levels of lead, low levels of tobacco particulates are associated with cognitive deficits among children.

What Can Be Done

With all the facts and technical information out on the table now, the next logical question is, What can be done about second and third hand smoke?

The first and most obvious answer is if you are a smoker, STOP immediately. Different approaches to quitting work for different people. If you're a smoking parent, you couldn't do a better thing for yourself and your loved ones by quitting. Do it for your loved ones and everyone around you.

Next, support smoking bans in your area. Some locations ban smoking in all public places, including bars. The Centers for Disease Control released a study recently showing that the number of heart attack cases dropped in the three years following Pueblo, Colorados smoking ban.

Last, if you have kids, especially teenagers, make sure kids understand the dangers that go along with tobacco use. Giving kids information about the risks of smoking can help protect them from these unhealthy habits. Kids need a strong repeated message. Teaching kids about smoking isnt just one time conversation, its a regular message that you must establish and keep going from childhood through the teenage years and up if necessary.

Stop Chain Smoking & Kick Your Cigarette and Nicotine Habit For Good! - Health - Quit Smoking

Even if you are a chain smoker, I'm sure you know all of the harmful effects that come from smoking. Whether it is first hand or second hand smoke, studies have shown that cigarette smoke causes harmful physical effects to long-term smokers. If smoking is expensive, horrible for your health, smelly, and can kill you, why do you keep doing it?

First of all, you must find out when you are most likely to smoke. Some people just smoke whenever a coworker or friend is smoking. Others enjoy a smoke with their morning coffee, or right before they are about to go to sleep. Whatever type of smoker you may be, it is important to pin point it so that you can combat your cravings.

Next, you need to figure out how to combat your cravings. Let's say you enjoy a smoke with your morning coffee. An easy solution to this problem is to limit the number of cups of coffee you drink each morning. If you do not want to give up your coffee, drink it in a place where you are unable to smoke.

The third step is probably the easiest out of all of them. Clear out hour home, car, office, and anywhere else you may be of all cigarettes and smoking paraphernalia. Do not, and I mean do not leave an extra pack of cigarettes lying around your house for a bad day. If you do this, at the first sign of stress you will be reaching for the cigarettes and your habit will come right back.

Finally, think about the end result; the result that will come when you are a non-smoker. You will be able to turn down a cigarette and feel great about it. A great way to remind yourself about the end result is to leave little notes around your house to motivate you.

When Is The Best Time To Quit Smoking? - Health - Quit Smoking

No matter what method of quitting you decide to use, prepare yourself before you have your last cigarette. Are you ready? It's a hopeless case if you're not ready, but once you've made that huge decision to quit, when is the best time to quit smoking? Are we talking time of day, Monday morning, end of the month, in the Spring, when I run out of cigarettes or within the next 38 minutes and 13 seconds by clicking here.

It doesn't matter how you quit or when you quit, what matters most is have a system that works for you and then have a plan. Personally, I liked to have a list of all the quit smoking benefits to remind myself during those crucial moments of nicotine attacks. Things like more money at the end of the month, smell better, taste better, look better, feel better, lower cholestral, lower blood pressure, not having to make plans on where and how to have the next cigarette. Today it's getting to be almost impossible to have a cigarette with all the rules and laws taking over our privacy and freedom. There has never been a better time to quit smoking than now. Once you have your plan to quit completed, have your last cigarette before you go to bed for the night. Clean up any ashtrays or cigarettes or any signs of cigarettes so when you wake up in the morning, your ready to bite the bullet. Set out some snacks or hard candies or toothpicks or straws in places where you would normal ly have a cigarette. You'll require tremendous willpower for the first week of quitting and especially during the first three days, if you don't use any drugs or quit smoking aids.

Some statistics from the UK shows us that in 1972, half the adults were smokers and by 1990, this number dropped to one third. Today, one quarter of the adults are smokers. Also, another stat shows that 17000 children, five years and younger are admitted to hospitals each year, due to illnesses caused by their parents second hand smoke. Smokers need to understand that by quitting, you don't only lessen your chance of lung cancer and heart disease but you give yourself a a boost of new energy by improving your blood circulation which in turn will make you feel much, much better, improving your fertility and sex life.

Having the right game plan with a more than positive attitude, should be enough to make smoking a thing of the past. Thirty days without a smoke is such a great feeling. Your body has recovered from those severe nicotine attacks, your breathing feels normal, your cholesterol level has improved and your overall health has improved significantly. This is when you realize that every minute of suffering was worth it. In Canada, you'd have an extra $300.00 to spend elsewhere at one pack per day at $10.00 a pack.

BTW: If you want to quit smoking without feeling like you're a survivor on a nicotine covered island and you're willing to use an unconventional method practiced by Anthony Robbins, you have to see what I found right here

Should the UK smoking ban be extended? - Business - Security

On 1st July 2007 England followed Scotland and Wales in implementing a smoking ban, making the whole of the UK 'smoke free'. These smoking bans mean smoking in enclosed public spaces and workplaces, has been prohibited throughout the UK since this date. Part of this legislation placed a statutory requirement on those responsible for public buildings and workplace facilities, to display no smoking signs. These mandatory no smoking safety signs are required to be at least A5 (150x200mm) in size and contain the text "No Smoking. It is against the law to smoke in these premises" Many people took advantage of the free signs supplied by the government 'smokefree England' campaign. You can see these standard safety signs at the main entrances of most UK public buildings and work premises. Work vehicles are also covered by the ban and alternative wording to cover this situation "No Smoking. It is against the law to smoke in this vehicle" is allowed.Since this campaign has been so s uccessful in reducing both the number of people actively smoking, and those effected by passive 2nd hand smoke - the government is now looking to extend the scope. Under proposals being reviewed by Andy Burnham, the Health Secretary, the smoking ban could be strengthened to include entrance-ways, pub gardens and other areas currently popular with smokers doggedly refusing to be put off.Presumably if the extent of the ban were increased it would cover far more areas and aim to make it much harder to find somewhere that you are actually allowed to smoke. Areas which could be covered by this extension to the ban include:Entrances to officesBus SheltersPub GardensOutside pubs / clubs and restaurantsPersonal vehiclesRailway platformsPublic pavementsPublic parks and gardensAnywhere on hospital groundsIf all these areas are to be covered by any new regulations, and additional no smoking signage is required - those responsible for managing the effected facilities will have to think carefully about how this can be implemented. As there are already complaints in the media about the profusion of safety signs on display in the public environment - if this means new no smoking signs are required to be displayed - it will have to be done sensitively.According to NHS figures - treating the effects of smoking costs some 2.7 billion a year and smoking is the primary cause of 80,000 deaths. Despite this arresting argument, there are still dissenters who think the current ban is draconian. Forest - the political lobbying group set up to oppose restrictions on smoking, say that "The current smoking ban, which has had a devastating impact on community pubs and clubs, is out of all proportion to the harm allegedly caused by second-hand smoke. Further restrictions will only accelerate that trend."It will shortly be the third anniversary of the UK wide smoking ban - considering all the discussion prior to it's implementation - it's generally considered to have been ef fective. Since all the efforts to date seem to have had positive health effects on the population, The Department of Health won't stop it's war on the tobacco companies (and smokers) here. Having banned media advertising & smoking in public - the next logical stages are to prevent cigarettes using branded packaging and then extending the coverage of the smoking ban. Many people believe, that in years to come we'll look back at these arguments and wonder why smoking was not only allowed, but was in fact, a popular activity!

8 reasons to quit smoking - Health - Quit Smoking

Smoking is a huge problem of public health. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that each and every year more than 4.9 million people die all over the world as consequence of tobacco habit. Smoking is killing more people than any disease known on earth. This death toll is going to rise and there are studies that point to an expectable number of 10 million deaths in direct consequence of smoking, in the years 2020/30 to come. It's a global and epidemic problem that needs to be solved.

Tobacco is known by the addiction that causes, mainly because it contains a powerful drug, the nicotine, that is in fact the responsible for all the addiction symptoms a smoker fells each time he or her tries to quit. Nicotine is a psychoactive drug, like cannabis, that causes changes in behaviour, consciousness and mood due to the fact that it alters the brain functioning. The path that leads from the first smoking experience to true dependency is very short, be aware of that. There are more than 400 toxic and irritating chemicals substances in a sole cigarette. From those, more then 40 are carcinogenic and have the ability to trigger all sort of oncological diseases. But the risk is not only for the smoker health, its present for all of those that are no smokers and are exposed to the so called second hand smoke. The risk for no smokers to became ill because of smoke is very high and that's the cause for one to refrain smoking in their presence. Children are the most affe cted group, studies say.

Nowadays there are irrefutable scientific proofs that confirm the link between smoking and several deadly diseases. If we resume those proofs we can get 8 reasons to quit smoking:

And, above all, the life expectancy of a smoker is ten years shorter then an equivalent non-smoking individual.

Smoke If You Want To Die - Health

An agricultural product that is processed from the leaves of plants in the genus Nicotiana is named tobacco. Tobacco is burned and the vapours are either savoured or inhaled. The practice of tobacco smoking began way back since 5000 " 3000 BC. Tobacco affects almost every organ of the human body. According to surveys, the usage of tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death worldwide, resulting in about 6 million deaths every year. Second-hand smoke which is also known as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), results in approximately 3000 lung cancer deaths yearly in non-smokers. Second-hand smoke is exhaled by smokers at the end of the burning cigarette. In fact, smokeless tobacco consumers and cigar smokers have the similar health risks as cigarette smokers.

Cigarette smoking causes both short-term and long-term effects. Short-term smoking effects include frequent respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia, bronchitis, coughs, and colds. Children and youths that are exposed to second-hand smoke are more prone towards asthma, lower respiratory infections, and ear infections. Long-term smoking effects are widespread. Numerous diseases linked to smoking include lung cancer, increased risk for stomach cancer, bladder cancer, mouth and throat cancer, cervical cancer, and pancreatic cancer. Tobacco usage is linked to about one third of all cancers and 90% of lung cancer cases are caused by smoking.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is also caused by smoking. COPD refers to severe lung damage. Smoking results in reduced blood circulation and blood vessel narrowing in the body. Oxygen levels in the body are deprived, thus increasing risk of heart disease. Non-smokers are 25% more likely to develop heart diseases because of being exposed to second-hand smoke. Besides, the risks for stroke and developing cataracts are doubled by smoking. Additional health risks are also posed for women. Risks for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) leads to osteoporosis, thus increases the chances of spine and hip fractures in women having post menopause. Smoking habits during pregnancy increases the baby's health risks and results in low birth weight, premature birth, or respiratory illnesses.

Cigarette smoking must be prevented and can only be accomplished with every individual's realisation towards smoking effects and through their own strong will to quit smoking.

Understanding the Effects of Smoking on Your Dental Health - Health - Wellness

Smoking is the most universal bad dental health habit! Each day, more than 3,000 kids, over one million a year, become regular smokers.

One-third of them will die prematurely from tobacco-related diseases. Several factors contribute to this national health epidemic, including the roughly $5 billion tobacco companies spend each year on advertising and marketing to attract new smokers.

What are the consequences of smoking?

1. Smokers lose an average of 14 years of life due to their habit.

2. With every puff of cigarette you breathe in 4,700 different chemicals.

3. Smoking turns your teeth yellow by leaving sticky tar deposits which can also cause brown stains

4. Your fingernails turn yellow

5. Bad breath

6. Second hand smoke harms those around you

7. Smoker's palate (red inflammation of roof of the your mouth)

8. You are more likely to develop calculus, plaque that hardens on your teeth and can only be removed during a professional cleaning.

9. Tobacco may also limit blood flow to gum tissue, restricting the necessary nutrients to the bone and periodontal support of the teeth.

10. Increased risk and severity of gum recession and gum disease leading to tooth and bone loss. If you start smoking at age 18 and smoke a pack a day, you could lose four to five teeth by the time you are 35!

11.Smoking delays healing after any dental treatment and can lead to a condition know as dry socket after oral surgery.

12. Black hairy tongue.

13. Oral lesions.

14. Oral cancer of the mouth, pharynx, larynx and esophagus. Smoking causes 75 % of all oral cancer. The type of tobacco product used will dictate where the oral cancer will be located.

15. Smoking before and immediately after receiving periodontal therapy, bleaching, cosmetic dentistry, or oral surgery is not recommended.

16. Smokeless tobacco use leads to generalized early-onset periodontitis (gum disease) and an increased risk for oral cancer.

17. Loss of taste.

18. Less success with periodontal treatment and dental implants.

19. Tobacco use reduces the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to gingival tissue.

20. There are over 4,000 chemicals in cigarette smoke including: formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, ammonia, arsenic.

The rate of tooth loss due to smoking is about 2.9 teeth every 10 years!

What Can You Do:

1. Stop smoking and chewing

2. Regular checkups-every 3 months by your dentist for oral cancer examination and professional cleanings

3. Brush your teeth using an ultrasonic toothbrush 2 times a day, especially in the area where you chew, both before and after. Most importantly brush before you go to bed. (You swallow 3,000 a day while you are awake. Saliva helps neutralize the acids in your mouth. You only swallow about 30 times at night leaving your mouth dry and creating a great environment for dental decay) Brush for 2 to 5 minutes, especially being careful to thoroughly clean at the gum line. Use a timer because most people only brush 20 sec!

4. Floss daily (only 33% of people floss). Try the automatic flosser by Waterpik if you do not floss regularly.

5. Use a mouthwash that is alcohol free and has a antibacterial agent in it, like BreathRX Are you seriously considering quitting in the next 30 days....If you say no you are not ready to quit.

6. Do an oral cancer self examination by:

a. Checking for any sores on your face, neck or mouth that do not heal within two weeks

b. Repeated bleeding in your mouth

c. White, red or dark patches in your mouth. Use your fingers to pull out your cheek by taking your index finger on the inside of your check and your thumb on the outside and gently squeeze and roll your check with your fingers to check for these items, do this to both checks. Look in a mirror at the roof of your mouth by tilting your head back and with your mouth open looks for discoloration or lumps.

d. Swellings, lumps or bumps on your lips, gums, or other areas in your mouth. You can do this by pulling your lower dip down and look inside for any sores or color changes and feel for lumps, do this with your upper lip too

e. Numbness, pain or loss of feeling in any area of your mouth

f. Check your tongue and floor of your mouth. Pull your tongue gently out and look at each side, top and underside for color changes and feel for any lumps or swelling.

If you find anything unusual call us immediately and tell our receptionist about your findings so she can get you in quickly. Additional Ideas:

The average person takes 6 times before they are successful at quitting smoking, but each time the success rate doubles.

Ask your doctor for Xyban plus patches plus gum...this is the most effective combination for medications for cessation of smoking.

Smoking and its Health Issues to You and Those Around You - Health

Addiction to smoking tobacco products is considered an epidemic. It kills in excess of 5 million people each year worldwide. Of this 5 million people, 70 % percent are considered low or middle income countries and the gap is between the high income countries is expected to become greater in the next decade with the death toll rising to an estimated 8 million people by 2030. It is still considered a preventable death, and is the leading cause of preventable deaths worldwide.

The health issues around smoking come from the inhalation of smoke generated by burning tobacco, which in turn release multiple chemicals into the body and the air around the smoker. The smoker is not the only person affected by smoking a tobacco product but the people around them are exposed to the "second hand" smoke as well. Second hand smoke is responsible for the premature deaths of 600 000 people yearly.

It is been to cause sudden death in infants whilst pregnant mothers who smoke generally give birth to low weight babies. Of the 600 000 deaths caused by second hand smoke, 31% of them are children who have been exposed. Studies have also shown that children exposed to second hand smoke are also more likely to become smokers.

Of course, the smoker carries a higher risk with much greater exposure to the chemicals produced by burning tobacco. Only after 15 to 20 years of quitting smoking does a smoker's risk of heart and lung disease become closer to that of a non-smoker. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, emphysema and chronic bronchitis, all of which can lead to death. The heart and blood system of the body is affected by decreased blood vessel size and the ability to carry oxygen in the red blood cells is reduced. This means that the heart has to work harder to get the necessary oxygen levels to the rest of the body, but takes more strain as it doesn't have enough oxygen itself.

Cancer that affects smokers generally affects the lungs, throat, mouth, nasal and sinus passages, as well other forms such as pancreatic and bladder. It is estimated that a third of the cancer deaths each year is caused by smoking. The carcinogens absorbed by the body through smoking inhibit the body's ability to control the growth of cells which in turn cause the cancerous cells to grow out of control.

Outside of these life threatening issues associated with smoking, a smoker is more susceptible to colds, flu and pneumonia. They also often use cigarettes as a meal replacement as it suppresses the appetite, resulting in further risks to illnesses as the body doesn't absorb enough of its required nutrients. The activity level of smokers is much less than those of non smokers and they cannot keep up in the same sporting environment due to things such as lack of breath.

Overall, there are no benefits to smoking, but plenty of downsides, even if it's just as a casual smoker. The reason is that tobacco smoke is a harmful poison and the body is not equipped to handle it.

Getting to the point where you have a strong desire to quit smoking may be easier if you think about your family, your financial situation or your health.

It's a fact that smoking is bad for you. It negatively impacts everything from your heart and lungs right through to your sex life. It causes any number of life threatening diseases, like cancer and heart disease.

Not only does smoking affect your health, it also potentially affects the health of your children through second hand smoke. And there is proof that the adult children of smokers become smokers far more frequently than children raised in a non smoking home.

Smoking also has a huge financial impact. Tobacco products are not cheap. Just think about all the things you could buy if you weren't buying cigarettes.

The second vital factor is having the confidence that you will be able to kick the habit. This one is trickier if you've ever tried to quit and then started back up. When you started smoking again you probably felt disappointed in yourself. Every "failure" messes with your level of confidence.

It's difficult to overcome the negative thoughts and be positive in your outlook. But it can be done and you can do it by shifting your outlook on your quitting attempts.

Rather than beating yourself up for failing, give yourself some credit. After all, when you were trying to quit you did smoke less, didn't you? That's a success, not a failure. And because you were able to do it before, there's no reason why you can't do it now.

When you are learning to drive, it takes practice and you may even have to complete a driver's training program in some areas, before you are going to be able to get your driver's license. You have to learn the rules of the road as well as the actual act of operating a motor vehicle. That takes time. Smoking cessation is kind of like that. It will take some time, maybe even a lot of time.

The third factor which is vital to success is to decide on a stop smoking method. There are lots of stop smoking methods, from cold turkey, to nicotine replacement, to hypnosis, to herbal remedies to mention a few.

With this many choices, you may wonder what the best method is. The best method to stop smoking is whatever method works. And be prepared to try more than one method if the first one doesn't work. There is no definitive answer because everybody is different, so what works for your friend may not be effective for you.

The whole point is that if you have a strong desire to quit, and you feel confident that you can succeed, then all you need to do is find the right quit smoking method. Trying to quit smoking may not be easy, but it's worth doing for so many reasons.

If you trying to become smoke free but are having trouble quitting, maybe it's time to try a natural smoking cessation product. With the Smoke Deter system, you can get nicotine craving relief and stop smoking the easy natural way. Visit stopsmoking-tips.com for details.

Curbing Tobacco with Strictest Smoking Laws - Health

Despite apparent health risks posed by smoking, many countries across the horizon still have loose laws regarding it, if ever they have any. In fact, there are still lands wherein ordinary individuals and people in medical uniforms and basic scrubs alike are able to smoke in hospitals or within the hospital premises. As a result, the efforts to curb tobacco-related hospitalizations, illnesses and deaths barely made any change. However, now that several other countries set out to also control smoking, more changes are expected.

No smoking in public and private places. So far, Canada is the country that was able to see results of the smoking bans it has implemented in both public and private places, like work offices. Smoking levels have become the lowest in the world, only with an estimated 21% of 15-year-old Canadians and up. As a result Canada is credited with reduced heart and respiratory problem related hospital admissions by about a third. If the campaign continues to be successful, even the cost on smoking related health problems will be reduced, along with the tasks shouldered by those in medical uniforms. Success of anti-smoking campaigns, though, will largely depend on implementation. Starters can learn from countries that took stringent laws and implemented them as necessary.

No smoking in bars and nightclubs. These are the places where people smoke, because as we know, these are where drinking happens, the best match for smoking. Since, bars and nightclubs have customers that mostly smoke, they are also the best target of anti-smoking campaigns. And for such places whose main customers are smokers, the ban is a real big blow. Many countries have adopted this, including Estonia, New Zealand, Spain, Poland, Finland, France, Ireland, Montenegro, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. In Germany, such ban was extended from pubs and restaurants to popular festivals such as the Oktoberfest in Munich.

More costly cigarettes. Cigarette price was raised by 20%. Which country had the guts to impose this? France. This strategy seemed to have helped the country curb smoking, wherein changes on smoking attitude is said to have been dramatic. Australia also raised taxes on cigarettes by 25%. The U.S. also made the same step when Pres. Obama signed the 62-cent increase in federal cigarette tax, making it a law.

Sky-high smoking fine. The Republic of Ireland has set a real big amount of fine that commoners could hardly pay, if they smoke on any prohibited place. Anyone caught breaching the law will have to pay the fine of 3,000. In such a country where a large population staggers with economy, an amount of 50,000 Kenya shillings as smoking fine could kill them quicker than smoking would. Law breakers that cannot pay the fine will have to stay behind bars for 6 months. If not in prison, theyd most likely end up in hospitals, begging those in medical uniforms to help extend their lives.

No smoking in TV ads and portrayals. A less stringent law is being implemented in India, prohibiting tobacco companies from directly and indirectly advertising to children. However, in Montenegro, tobacco advertising is banned. Of course, this means limiting the influence of tobacco to young people and starters. Even in television portrayals, smoking was crushed by the government.

Anti-tobacco image warnings on cigarette products. It seems odd to actually still put health warnings on the packages of products that bring nothing but health risks. If tobacco kills, bar it entirely then. While these warnings cant be convincing to some anti smokers, the images of diseases lungs and rotten gums on cigarette packets could significantly hurt tobacco companies.

No smoker on high-ranking jobs. Iranian Labor News Agency, or ILNA, reported that no smoker can take high-ranking executive jobs in the Iranian government. For Muslims who adhere to Islamic laws, such a ban would have any effect. But since smoking has also consumed the community, the campaign might still be hard for some Iranians.

Once smoking ban in cars that carry children is implemented in Australia, those strict anti smoking laws will step on yet another milestone. New Zealand will also make a name if the law prohibiting smoking in prisons becomes a reality. These strict laws would hopefully curb deaths and hospitalizations resulting from first hand and second hand smoke.

Healthcare and Health Insurance in California - Insurance

California Health Insurance Giant Aided by Health Insurance ReformAccording to the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Peter Orszag, the historic health insurance reform provides the most deficit reduction of any bill in the past decade. It's estimated to reduce the deficit by more than $100 billion over the first decade, and by $1 trillion in the following decade. The health insurance reform bill includes help for major health insurance companies and doctor-owned hospitals. That includes help for the giant California-based insurance company Kaiser Permanente, according to congressional aides and lobbyists. The latest changes to the 153-page health insurance reform bill include a provision that tax-exempt insurers would have to pay a new fee levied on insurers on only half of their premiums. Kaiser Permanente is one of these tax-exempt insurers.California Health Insurance Reform and MedicareThe bill also extends an August 1st deadline on new doctor-owned hospita ls to apply to the government for eligibility to be paid for Medicare patients until the end of 2010.According to a 2003 report by the Kaiser Family Foundation, 40.2 million Americans were enrolled in Medicare. That was 14 percent of the U.S. population. California had the largest enrollment of any state with 4.1 million Medicare beneficiaries, or 11 percent of the state's population.California Representative Tackles Tobacco IndustryWhile the media focused on the health insurance reform debate, the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act was signed into law by President Obama on June 22, 2009.By all accounts, it is the strongest measure to protect children from the dangers of smoking to date. Why does this law focus on children? Almost 90 percent of all smokers began at or before their 18th birthday. We've known about this for decades, but the tobacco industry has used special-interest lobbying to manipulate Congress.Blatant refusal to accept responsibility for the sicknesses caused by cigarettes was exposed as recently as 1994 when Rep. Henry Waxman first brought tobacco CEOs before Congress. Waxman has represented the 30th congressional district of California in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1975, and has called cigarettes the single most dangerous consumer product ever sold. Before Congress, these CEOs still denied that tobacco was deadly, that nicotine was addictive, and that they marketed to children. In reality, tobacco companies aggressively target children, and sell products with flavorings to mask the taste of tobacco and make it more tempting.Healthcare Reform Has Potential to Help MillionsMore than 400,000 Americans die of tobacco-related illnesses each year, and more than 8 million of us suffer from at least one serious illness caused by smoking. While you've probably heard that second-hand smoke can kill, third-hand smoke that is trapped in carpet, fabric, furniture, hair, skin, and toys also exposes you to toxic chemicals like arsenic and lead. Babies take in 20 times more third-hand smoke than adults because they breathe faster, and spend more time near the floor. The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act is a victory for health care reform because it will reduce the billions of dollars we spend on tobacco-related health care costs in this country. It is intended to reduce the number of children who start smoking, and to save American lives and make us healthier. It also makes health insurance in California more affordable. This Act bans tobacco advertising within a thousand feet of playgrounds and schools. It also curbs the ability of tobacco companies to market products to children by using appealing flavors. It forces tobacco companies to more clearly and publicly acknowledge the deadly effects of their products, and allows FDA scientists to take other common-sense steps to reduce the dangers of smoking.

Are You Tired Of Using Quit Smoking Products? Come And Use Electronic Cigarettes For Better Success! - Health - Quit Smoking

Recently, if youve been reading news on latest inventions, you might have come across something on electronic cigarettes. E-cigs, as they are popularly called are the electronic versions of normal cigarettes. Available in a variety of styles and colors, they are better at aiding a person to quit smoking than other quit smoking products seen in the market. Instead of going heavy nicotine levels to absolutely zero nicotine, using these cigarettes you have a choice to switch from higher nicotine levels to lower and then zero levels.

How does an e-cig look like? The structure of the e-cig device is made up of two or three parts. In a three part cigarette, one part would be the battery, the other would be an atomizer and the third part would be for the cartridge. In a two-part cigarette, the battery would be at one part and the atomizer and the cartridge section would be placed together in another part.

When the device is switched on, the nicotine solution is heated by the atomizer and in turn vapor is released. This vapor is very thin, when compared to the thickness of cigarette smoke and does not pose the kind of danger that is seen when smoking real cigarettes.

Electronic cigarettes eliminate the need for using any matchbox, lighter or even an ashtray, as there is no real fire or ash involved. Moreover, they do not pose the problem of stained teeth or fingers, nor do they create any bad breath problems. Vapor that comes from an electronic cigarette quickly dissolves into the air and is not thick and smelly like normal cigarettes smoke. Neither does it have any of its toxins, tar or carcinogens. This makes the device safer to use in crowded places. It can be used in public areas where smoking is banned also. Why Quit Smoking - Health - Quit Smoking

Most smokers at some stage have asked the question, why quit smoking? In fact surveys show that 70% of current smokers would like to quit. But how is the smoker thinking about quitting going to tackle the process? This is an important question as there are a bewildering number of quit aids and programs available. But the methods available to help you quit smoking will have to wait for another article. In this article I am specifically concerned with the important question, why quit smoking?

Why Quit Smoking: The List

It's a good idea to make a list of all the reasons why you should quit. It will act as inspiration during the dark times of nicotine cravings. Keep it close by and when the going gets tough take it out and read the contents out loud. What follows is my own personal why quit smoking list. It helped steady my resolve when I was ready to give in to the deadly enemy, nicotine addiction.

Why Quit Smoking: Health

This is the big number one on my why quit smoking list- smoking is hazardous to your health. There is no way of getting round the fact that 50% of smokers will be killed by their deadly habit. The list of diseases directly attributable to smoking is a long one. When we think of cancer and smoking we think of lung cancer. And indeed lung cancer is the big killer of smokers. It is estimated that 1 in 8 long term smokers will develop lung cancer. Lung cancer is a terrible disease and only 5% of those diagnosed will be still around 5 years later. Smoking also increases the risk for mouth cancers and cancers of the food pipe. But it is not just parts of the body in direct contact with the smoke that can develop cancer. Cancer can also occur at remote sites, such as the bladder and pancreas.

The poisonous chemicals and tar present in tobacco smoke directly injure lung tissue. This can lead to a progressive degeneration of the lung, called emphysema. Over time the air sacs in the lung, responsible for oxygen absorption, become destroyed leaving the sufferer gasping to draw breath. There is no cure and the only relief is to stop smoking. Smokers are also at risk of developing heart and vascular disease. The carbon monoxide in smoke causes the blood vessel walls to become 'sticky' thus increasing the possibility of a blood clot resulting in a blockage. Depending on where the blockage occurs, the smoker may suffer a stroke, heart attack, or even gangrene of the limbs. Has this smoking induced list of horrors made you stub out your last cigarette yet? The good news is once you stop smoking the body starts to heal and your relative risk for smoking related diseases starts to steadily decrease.

Why Quit Smoking: The Money

My second item on the why quit smoking list, is money. Quitting is like getting a pay rise and a tax exempt pay rise at that. Within a year you will find that you have saved a tidy sum. Sadly, it is often those that can least afford the habit that continue to smoke. Nevertheless, no matter what your financial status, smoking is becoming an increasing expensive pastime due to government tax hikes.

Why Quit Smoking: Social Pariah

The third thing to be considered on my why quit smoking list is the social consequences. I don't know if you have noticed but not that many people smoke these days; it has become a minority habit with just over 20% of the adult population being classified as smokers, at least in the developed world. Everyone is aware of the dangers of second hand smoke and are jealous about guarding their own and children's health. Smokers are no longer tolerated in the workplace, restaurant and bar; just about every public area is off limits to smokers. Bans are even being implemented in municipal areas, such as parks.

Why Quit Smoking: Because You Smell

It's really no fun being a smoker these days, which brings me to the fourth item on my why quit smoking list. I'll state the obvious: smokers stink. You can usually smell that someone is a smoker. Even if you can't smell it on their breath you can smell the distinctive pungent odour on their clothes and even on their hair. I suspect that few smokers really appreciate how bad they smell, or perhaps they don't care. As a smoker you are a drug addict and personal hygiene will always come second place to the addiction.

Why Quit Smoking: The Bits I've Left Out

The final item, or items, on my quit smoking list is a mixed collection that don't neatly fit into the other categories. Well to be honest I could have placed the following in the 'health category' but for no particular reason they've ended up in the 'odds and sods' section on my list. This one's for the men in the audience: It's official; smoking causes impotence resulting in the inability to obtain or sustain an erection. And sexual and reproductive problems are not just confined to men. Women may experience decreased fertility and therefore have difficulty in conceiving. So, I've come to the final point of my personal why quit smoking list: Smoking damages the collagen in your skin. What this means in practical terms is that the toxins present in tobacco smoke damage the elastic fibres in the skin causing premature wrinkles. Doctors have for some time been able to recognise a characteristic 'smokers face'. Apart from the sallow complexion, regular smokers can be recogni sed by their 'pucker mouths' and the deeply etched lines around the eyes.

So that's my particular why quit smoking list. Yours may differ to some extent but I'm sure that the main items of health and money will feature somewhere. Anyway, the best of luck with your own list. And in all the excitement don't forget to quit smoking- even if it takes more than one attempt.
